SYBA Game Rules
Division 2 Boys

“Athletes First, Winning Second”.   Encourage positive participation, good sportsmanship, and respect for all players, coaches, referees and parents.  Have FUN!!

Games will consist of quarters lasting eight minutes each.  There will be 1 minute between quarters and 5 minutes for half time. A game ending in a tie will go into one 3-minute overtime period. If the game is tied after one OT the game will end in a tie.  All standard violations will be called according to scholastic rules.

The clock will run continuously and will only be stopped for time-outs, free throws and injuries. The last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter with a lead of less than 5 points and during overtime the clock will be stopped for all appropriate clock stoppages (according to official scholastic rules).

Each team is allowed (3) three 20 second time-outs per game.  In overtime play each team will have one 20 second time out. Time outs do not carry over. Games ending in a tie after the first overtime period will end in a tie.

Each player has five fouls and will be out of the game on the fifth foul, except with a team playing with only 5 players, in which case a two-minute penalty will be issued to the player.  The next foul on this player will result in a forfeit of the game for this team.

Teams may begin with 4 players but must play with 5 for a minimum of two complete quarters and end game with 5 (except for injuries & 2-minute penalty rule), otherwise the game is forfeited.  A team with two players on the 2-minute penalty rule will automatically forfeit.

Teams will not be able to apply defensive pressure until the ball crosses the blue line in the offensive teams’ frontcourt. Exception is in the last 2 minutes of 4th quarter and overtime or when the lead is 5 points or less. Both conditions must exist for full court pressure to begin.

Fast breaks are allowed off any change of possession. After a change of possession and there is no indication that the offense is trying to advance the ball, the official can then request that the defense release to the opposite end of the court. This is at the discretion of the official as to the intent of the offense at that moment.

Each player must play a minimum of two full quarters (16 minutes). Each player must rest a minimum of 4 minutes. For this purpose, a substitution is made available at the 4-minute mark in the 2nd and 4th   quarters. Otherwise, substitutions can only be made at the beginning of each quarter or in the event of an injury.  Abuse of playing time may result in a forfeit of game.

Division directors will be allowed to make all game-time final rulings about playing time. Referees will oversee all other issues.

Team fouls will be tracked, but we will only shoot the double bonus at the on the 10th team foul per half.

Play will be on a regulation 10’ goal with a 28.5” ball. No 3 point field goals

When a team has a 15 point lead the defense will be restricted to only play defense inside the 3-point arc. When the lead is at 15 points in the second half, the clock will only stop for injuries. No stoppage for timeouts or free throws. The scores will only be counted in the book, not on the clock. If the score reaches 14 or below revert back to the 15-point rule. Return to regular clock

*Coaches must submit the leagues play chart which details the mandatory playing time for each player before game time.
